Great, the cheaper energy is, the more it will be wasted. How about heavily tiered rates and rationed fossil fuels? If we want to consider the absurdity of trying to continue the suicidal path of unlimited growth and consumption on a finite planet, making energy cheaper is not the way. Most people will only conserve when prices are high and resources are valued.

Energy is all around us and it is free. The sun warms us dayly and never sends a bill. We should be covering every square mile of uninhabitable land with solar modules to harvest the wasted energy we aren't using now. Maybe then, with abundant and cheap energy, people will first be more comfortable as they live now, and secondly those places which are currently barren might be rejuvenated with desalinated water and reforestation. I see cheap energy as a way to a better world, not a path to destruction. Rationing only works when there is a true shortage. As I look out the window, I see the sun is hard at work heating my hoise so I can pay to push that heat back outside. Somebody get me the phone number to the Sun. I need to tell them to knock it off.

I completely agree with pineywoodsdavid. We need to shift to a mentality of Abundance not rationing. The Sun's energy is phenomenal. In one hour of energy the Sun provides we can supply the world's energy needs for a year!! The Sun is a beautiful natural powerful ball of free Energy! Let's use our brains and harvest this endless (at least for the next 5billion years) source of energy. Also, PineyWoodDavid, when you get the Sun's Number let me know, I need to talk to him about not working on Labor Day :-) It's been rainy and dreary all day!

Almost a year later, and I see that the Sun is still hard at work. I called Sun Microsystems to ask about Labor Day, but they claimed to have no connection to the 'Sun'. Not responsible for how much heat it delivers to me, etc etc etc. I'm polite, so I say thanks and have a nice day. Why not take the hundreds of billions left in our 'stimulus package' and install solar farms in the desert southwest? Politics no doubt. That just stinks.

I'm thinking of designing a solar heating system for my house. Despite the claims of global warming, it has been very cold this winter. Friends in Wisconsin report negative readings, as do friends in Canada. It is very hot in Australia, so maybe there is something to the warming thing, or maybe this heating and cooling is cyclical? I remember reading something about "season" back in grade school. Back before the books became instruments of change. Ok so good luck with your solar projects.
