What's Happening in the Biodiesel from Algae Sector?
Simgae™ - Low Cost Algae Production System

Introduction

Diversified Energy Corporation (www.diversified-energy.com), a privately-held alternative and renewable energy company, and XL Renewables (www.xlrenewables.com), a biorefinery project developer, have developed and are commercializing an innovative algae production system. Aimed at addressing the shortage and rising prices of oils for biofuels production, coupled with accelerating environmental concerns from fossil fuel emissions, Simgae™ (for simple algae) offers a low cost and simple approach to growing algae at large scale. The focus on cost and simplicity addresses the major reason algae production has yet to materialize in any meaningful volumes. Diversified Energy® (DEC) has been granted an exclusive worldwide license from XL Renewables (XLR) to the patent-pending Simgae™ technology.

Simgae™ Overview

Algae has received substantial attention as a high-promise source of biofuel oils to alleviate the supply shortages and high prices of traditional feedstock sources like soybean, palm, canola, animal fats, etc. Since the feedstock input can contribute 60 – 80% of the biofuel production cost, keeping the feedstock cheap and readily available is paramount for continued growth of the biofuels industry. Algae has been shown to produce 30X more oil and require 1/100th the water to grow per surface area compared to other terrestrial crops. In addition, the non-oil components (i.e., carbohydrates and proteins) left over after oil extraction can be used for a multitude of purposes – as inputs into animal feed, fertilizer, dyes, etc. or used to produce ethanol via fermentation or syngas through gasification, among a multitude of other uses. These additional applications greatly enhance the overall marketability and economics of producing algae. Algae takes very little care to grow, only needing sunlight, water, CO2 and nutrients mainly in the form of nitrogen and phosphorous. Its ability to ingest CO2 and produce oxygen through photosynthesis is particularly attractive as many countries are rushing to find ways to curtail carbon emissions.

The Heated Debate Over Citizenre
I like where the comments are going so far. The big picture view of our planet, as seen from the moon,
would make our squabbles non existent. What we as humans need to do, is what CitizenRe has done with their business model. That simply is: to make it easy to switch to solar...end of story...we need a lot more clean, sustainable, renewable energy. We are running out of oil, coal combustion causes global warming, & do you know anyone who would like to have nuclear waste burried in their own back yard?

Let's get people to switch to solar on a MASSIVE SCALE.

Citizenre: A House of Cards?
HHHHMMMMMMMMMM let's see? $20,000 to $40,000. DOLLARS
or NO upfront cost & a 25 year rate freeze...

Yes that's a tough one...

The ONLY critics are industry insiders with a lot to loose...I question THEIR HONESTY.

Maybe the industry should adopt a similar business model. THAT WOULD BE A WIN WIN WIN...

Citizenre: A House of Cards?
Whenever you shake up a business model as thoroughly as Citizenre has, you end up rattling a few cages. If I were a solar installer, of course I would be concerned. I would probably have written an article just like this to help spread FUD (fear-uncertainty-doubt) -- it's an old technique.

Consider the source. Does Mr. Wolfe have anything to lose? C'mon, this site hosts a veritable "who's who" of established solar players; groSolar among them.

P.S. To critique our inverter technology is to be ignorant of DR. Rob Wills' work, he is world-renowned in this area. The rest of his opinion, is well...opinion.

Citizenre: A House of Cards?
I wrote, "our inverter technology". I'm not an employee of Citizenre, I'm an Independent Sales Associate. And my opinions, are, of course, my own!

What the PV Industry Can Learn from Google
I agree with the first comment here.In fact the fuse is already lit & about to expolde...and the second comment applies as well...many different servers to offer the opportunity & totally decentralized... and with the authors...
"Short Fuse technology solutions are ones whose developers anticipate these costs and risks and design them out right from the start. By doing so, they attract mainstream buyers far sooner than solutions created and deployed under the Long Fuse paradigm of slowly building credibility with the earliest adopters before bridging product and marketing efforts to the mainstream."
That is exactly what CitizenRe is doing, removing cost & risk.

Making Biofuel from Pond Scum
CO2 sequestration is the best application for this technology.CO2 is the greatest cause of global warming.
Algae love CO2...it is one of the main foods for their growth. The current idea of pumping billions of tons of CO2 underground is asking for trouble due to potential leaking back into the atmosphere. If the oil conversion process is not economical then the algae can be used as fertilizer & animal feed.

Green Fuel Technologies & GS Clean Tech are 2 companies that are also working on commercialization of this technology.
