John Toon is manager of the Georgia Tech Research News & Publications Office and editor of Georgia Tech’s Research Horizons magazine. He has more than 30 years of experience in communications, including media relations, publications, photography, advertising, speech writing and Web design/maintenance.
John joined Georgia Tech in 1987 after working as a reporter for two Athens newspapers, and as a correspondent for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He also led the industrial advertising program for the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism (now the Georgia Department of Economic Development), and was part of the staff responsible for launching the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC), Georgia Tech’s science and technology incubator.
He has served on the advisory board for the Media and Government Relations Division of the American Institute of Physics. He has published and presented on communications topics, and contributed a chapter on communicating science for A Field Guide for Science Writers published by the National Association of Science Writers. He is a member of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). John received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
