With his more than 15 years of executive experience in technology commercialization with global corporations and entrepreneurial enterprises, Dr. Kutney (Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Toronto) brings the innovation of research and technology development, the financial discipline of big business, and the spirit of entrepreneurship to start-ups and early-stage companies. His extensive C-level experience includes strategic, operational, business development, and administration leadership, business and financial planning, financing strategies and risk analysis. He has participated in all aspects of innovation and technology commercialization, from the research laboratory to the executive suite. Beginning his career in research and marketing on new and emerging technologies, he later led the business of a major forest products company, which included the largest cellulosic ethanol business in North America, a biopower facility and a global bioproducts business. He subsequently was president of an emerging-technology company and then an executive in an early-stage venture to commercialize a new technology. Among his affiliations, Dr. Kutney is the forestry bioenergy/bioproducts expert at Lee Enterprises – world’s largest alternative and renewable fuels consulting group, a Director of Biochar Ontario, a member of the ISO Technical Committee TC238 of the Standards Council of Canada on solid biofuels, and an approved consultant for BDC (the Business Development Bank of Canada). Gerald also participates in a variety of knowledge philanthropic activities. As a member of Progress Prince George, he was among a group of community leaders which provided strategic advice for the economic development of the city. Currently, he is an MBA mentor and Startup Tune-up mentor with the University of Ottawa, a steering committee member of the Ottawa Eco-Talent Network, and an entrepreneur mentor with Invest Ottawa.
