Dan Miles is a mechanical engineer who has been around mass spectrometer based leak testing for more than 20 years. After 12 years of involvement in an entrepreneurial air conditioning R&D venture in Atlanta, Dan moved to Oak Ridge and joined VTI in August of 1995. Dan went on to study at Georgia Tech where he earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. In 1998, Dan was recognized by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and certified as NDT Level III in the field of leak testing. As a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Dan has published and presented a number of technical papers. He was a participant in a panel discussion at ASHRAE’s 1999 Winter Meeting focused on the state of the art in leak detection equipment. Currently he serves on ASHRAE’s Refrigerant Containment Technical Committee and has been involved in their efforts to develop a standard method of test for hand held leak detectors.
