Last week, as part of the 2010 MIT Energy Conference, the institute opened the doors to its energy research projects. Press and other interested parties got a first look at technologies that could one day make renewable energy abundant, cheap and more deployable. These cutting-edge technologies were presented by a handful of MIT faculty and students who showed some innovations in the solar, hydrogen and energy storage areas that are on the road to commercialization.

On Tuesday, executives from the leading renewable energy trade associations emphasized the need for Congress to swiftly enact key policies to continue accelerated growth across the entire sector in order to add jobs and boost economic growth in 2010.

The announcement certainly was short on details wasn't it? I think business, rather than activism is at the core of the deal, which explains the timidity of his quote compared to his thoughts on global warming in the past. I would be willing to bet that Turner will be leasing a lot of his land for solar, wind and transmission projects.

In early 2009, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and industry experts predicted that the year would see a drop in the amount of wind capacity installed in the United States. The continuing recession, lack of tax credit financing and a reduction in demand for energy were expected to cause a drop in installations by as much as 50% from 2008 levels. However, yesterday after the numbers were tallied, it turned out to be another record breaking year for the U.S. wind energy industry with nearly 10,000 megawatts (MW) put in the ground.

In 2001, Cape Wind president Jim Gordon put forward a plan to build the first offshore wind farm in the United States off the coast of Massachusetts in Nantucket Sound. Nine years, countless public relations battles and a handful of lawsuits later, the project is just over a month away from receiving a final U.S. Mineral Management Service (MMS) decision that could make or break its future. The project was expected to be on a fast track to approval last year when MMS issued its final environmental impact statement on the project, which was favorable.

Thanks for your comment ynot. It is indeed the case that India is looking to develop 20 GW of solar by 2022, not 220 GW.

The U.S. has made great strides in installing renewable energy projects in the last five years. Renewables account for a larger percentage of U.S. energy generation than ever before and the country has surpassed Germany to lead in installed wind capacity worldwide. Germany and its European neighbors however remain far ahead of the U.S. when it comes to taking advantage of offshore wind resources. That may change in the next few years however as the U.S. regulatory, political and business climate becomes more friendly to wind developers looking to go offshore.

Bill: Another great point that needs to be considered. Leases for land have been a big part of wind development as well. And as much as those in the renewables industry don't like to admit it natural gas will probably play a big role in our near-term energy future. It is a fossil fuel and obviously emits far more greenhouse gases than solar PV, but it is a domestic energy source and helps to secure (at least for a while) our energy future. It's definitely a wider discussion and one that is and will continue to be a subtext to the debates over renewable energy that are taking place around the world. We just need to keep putting money on the tortoise and hope that it catches up soon.

LMerry: It's the people who disagree with the science or think its a fraud that the industry has to worry about in my opinion. These are the people who will be at town hall and planning meetings railing against "expensive" renewable energy projects that are "unnecessary" because climate change is a myth. It's getting them to even acknowledge that the ship is going down that seems to be the problem. To me the answer to them has to be that climate change, carbon and renewable energy policies and implementation will be an economic driver and a jobs creator.

Bill: I'm inclined to agree with you, but from my perspective as a journalist its very difficult to simply dismiss e-mails, commenters and other feedback as simply being from idiots. I think that climate change is very obviously the result of the carbon intensive industries and energy sources you mention. As Jennifer points out, I think the doubters need to be sidestepped rather than ignored, the security, economic, health and other tangible benefits of renewable energy, emission reduction and sustainability need to be put front and center. To borrow a comment from earlier in this thread, this is how we get everyone on the same sinking ship.

Bill: I understand. Yes, it's difficult to get people to see the net positives for company's and individuals' bottom lines when it comes to climate change and renewables but the case can be made and hopefully we as an industry will find better ways to make that case.

As the credit crunch was starting to loosen earlier this year, one of the first glimmers of hope came from the solar energy space. In June, SolarCity and U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation (USBCDC) formed a partnership to finance small- and medium-scale solar projects for homeowners and businesses across the U.S. The two companies created a new US $50 million tax-equity based fund to finance projects under SolarCity's SolarLease program.

Demand for solar energy could be down as much as 17% on the year for 2009. This is the stark reality the industry is facing as it slowly emerges from the recession that has caused demand for energy across the world to drop for the first time in a half-century. While this may put a damper on power industry growth in the short-term, long-term energy demand worldwide is expected to double by 2050 and with concerns about climate change on the rise, the prospects for the solar power industry remain bright.

Mark: Most wood pellets, at least here in New England aren't made from virgin wood, but rather a combination of, at least in the case of New England Wood Pellet, waste woods (furniture, telephone polls, mill waste), wood chips and a few other things. Gary: Most all government tax credits work that way. They need to ensure that the system is safe and was installed properly both for your safety and for their books. Anonymous: This tax credit is for residential heating applications. I'm not sure if the federal government here is in U.S. has a tax credit in place for boiler systems.

Ensuring that Americans are being trained to move into the renewable energy workforce is a major hurdle for the industry in today's sagging economy. In order to help advance the knowledge of those in the field training this new workforce, the Department of Energy's Solar America Cities partnership held a training session at the Florida Solar Energy Center for 18 representatives from 8 cities last month.

The solar photovoltaic space is experiencing polysilicon prices that are at the lowest levels in close to a decade. At the same time, demand is soft because of both falling prices and a weak global economy. Meanwhile, manufacturing prices have remained relatively stable, causing what some refer to as a reactive market.

Proponents of U.S. offshore wind projects like Cape Wind in Massachusetts and Bluewater Wind's project for Delmarva Power in Delaware have had their hopes buoyed in recent months by new U.S. policy framework, including commitments from the Department of the Interior, the Minerals Management Service and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, that encourage the development of offshore wind energy generation capacity.

Cautious optimism. That was the term being used across all sectors of the renewable energy industry in the days and weeks following the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) as industry leaders tried to understand exactly what the package could do for their often struggling companies. Yet as the weeks have worn on, the American public's support for the measure has started to wane.

The San Diego region is already home to more than 200 cleantech companies with more than 40 of them active in the renewable energy space. And if a new initiative led by the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and the CleanTECH San Diego trade organization is successful, the region will soon be much more: a true hub for the renewable energy and cleantech industries, spurring innovation, collaboration and creating jobs in the cleantech space.

While the pace of installations of distributed solar systems for homes and businesses has steadily risen over the past few years, utilities have mostly stayed out of the picture. However, that appears to be changing now as more and more utilities are looking at solar energy as major contributor to their current and future renewable energy portfolios.
