Solmetric PV Designer Software Calculates Shade Adjusted Output
October 29, 2009
Solar Power International, Anaheim CA. Solmetric Corporation has released the Solmetric PV Designer, a software tool that enables solar PV designers to optimize module layout and energy production in a partially shaded environment. The software processes shade measurements from the Solmetric SunEye™, a handheld electronic instrument, and enables module by module shade calculations even if only the corners of the array or roof are measured. It then calculates hourly AC kWh production. In addition, the software estimates the improvements in production by implementing SolarMagic power optimizers from National Semiconductor. PV Designer uses shade data collected for the installation site and enables the solar system designer to experiment with different array configurations to find the optimal design. The tool incorporates an extensive database of modules and inverters with complete specifications including dimensions. Designers can visualize shade and insolation over the array or roof area and compare different hardware, different module layouts, and with and without SolarMagic power optimizers. Calculations are based on the string current-voltage (IV) characteristics including the effects of partial shading. The system estimates the resultant energy production, and up to four design scenarios can be compared side by side. “Our goal is to make solar installation companies more successful with tools that make their jobs easier,” says Willard MacDonald, Solmetric President and CEO. “With PV Designer our SunEye customers can now do fast, high quality designs, incorporating their multiple on-site shade measurements more accurately than by simply averaging them. We think this will help achieve higher quality, site-specific PV designs in less time.” Solmetric has released the PV Designer for a free 60-day trial to all users of the Solmetric SunEye. The software can be accessed on line by visiting www.solmetric.com. About Solmetric Solmetric Corporation provides tools for solar energy and architecture professionals. The Solmetric SunEye™ is a handheld instrument that measures shading and solar access at a particular site and is designed for ease of use, accuracy, and convenient reporting.
