Munich, Germany
Today, while visiting the largest solar trade show in Europe, U.S. utilities interested in expanding their electricity portfolios to include more solar energy met briefly with New Mexico Governor, and former Secretary of Energy, Bill Richardson. The Governor expressed his pleasure at seeing the U.S. utility industry's increased interest in renewable resources.
The 31 utility executives and managers are in Germany for a week-long solar fact finding mission presented by the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA), a non-profit membership organization for the utility and solar industries. One of the primary goals of the trip is to examine how U.S. utilities can emulate the success of German utilities in integrating large quantities of renewable resources into a national power grid without creating transmission bottle necks, system quality distortions, and scheduling issues.
While in Germany, the utilities are visiting several multi-megawatt photovoltaic installations, a German solar research institute, a solar module manufacturing plant, and meeting with multiple Germany utilities and solar companies.
Photos and interviews with utility participants and SEPA executive director Julia Hamm are available upon request.
