Navigant Consulting, Inc. (NYSE: NCI), a specialized consulting firm providing dispute, financial, regulatory and operational advisory services, announced today that its Photovoltaic (PV) Service Program has launched a new newsletter, Concentrating Solar. The newsletter addresses issues specific to the concentrating solar power (CSP) and concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) communities, including investors in large multi-megawatt installations. The Concentrating Solar quarterly newsletter will move to bimonthly publication in 2010.
Concentrating Solar includes global industry news and highlights of technology testing and debuts, as well as company-specific news and one-on-one interviews with industry leaders. The first issue of Concentrating Solar covers a variety of topics including the restructuring of a solar thermal company, the effects of the financial crisis on the CPV and CSP industries, the potential transmission bottleneck, and the proliferation of gas and solar thermal hybrid plants in North Africa. Also included is an in-depth Q&A with the founder of SolFocus and a key researcher from SCHOTT.
Concentrating Solar also includes timely information project updates, such as: "Both the 400-MW Power Tower project BrightSource has proposed for Ivanpah Lake in San Bernardino, and the 750-MW Solar Two project proposed by Stirling Energy for Imperial County, require the construction of new transmission lines. In December 2008, the California Public Utilities Commission approved San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) plan to build the Sunrise Powerlink Transmission Project, a $1.9 billion, 500 kV transmission line needed to connect the Solar Two installation to the coast 120 miles away. The route proposed for the line, a path through the Borego desert, concerned local activists who lobbied SDG&E to build the new line along an existing transmission corridor. As long as local communities remain demanding of, and litigious towards, transmission developers, transmission planning will continue to take as long as eight or nine years."
“There is a market opening for concentrating solar technologies, and therefore, a real need for solid and forward looking information,” said Paula Mints, Principal Analyst with Navigant Consulting’s PV Services Program. “Concentrating Solar will provide current information and analysis to utilities and investors, and provide the same type of comprehensive analysis based on primary research that the basis for every report our PV Service Program releases.”
Concentrating Solar will be available through individual subscription or as part of Navigant Consulting’s larger Photovoltaic Services Program Subscription which includes a series of reports and newsletters providing comprehensive information and analysis about the photovoltaic industry, PV technologies, average module and system prices, and supply and demand by region, module, size, country and U.S. state – all backed by thirty years of historical data and current comprehensive market research.
