Weather solutions on display at All Energy 2012

Met Office
May 22, 2012

Print

Met Office experts will be at All Energy 2012 in Aberdeen this week to showcase the end-to-end consultancy services it provides for wind energy projects, both onshore and offshore.

Weather and climate have a huge impact on the success of both offshore and onshore renewable energy projects. Dual operation centres at our headquarters in Exeter and at our marine centre of excellence in Aberdeen guarantee an accurate and reliable supply of weather and metocean information. As the industry grows, we work in partnership to provide tailored solutions to the challenges ahead and help reduce risks with our expert advice during planning, construction and operations.

Onshore, the accuracy of high quality archives of simulated wind data is further improved by using the Met Office's high-resolution dynamical downscaling technique to allow for local terrain and land use around the site through its long-term wind assessment solution; Virtual Met Mast™.

Offshore, the development of a new marine data archive in a project worth over £110,000 of investment will allow the offshore renewables industry access to a more accurate standardised database, providing support to developers and operators through the lifecycle of a marine development.

The Met Office offers a range of innovative products aimed directly at the offshore and onshore renewable energy sector throughout each stage of the wind energy lifecycle, including:

  • Virtual Met Mast™ - the site-specific wind analysis model-based tool designed to provide fast and accurate wind farm site screening.
  • VisualEyes™ - an intuitive, web-based weather alert and monitoring system designed in conjunction with the industry to help manage onshore wind farm assets.
  • Safesee™ - a web-based forecast delivery system for the offshore industry that makes weather information easier to interpret and aids operational decision making anywhere in the world.
  • The Wind Production Forecast - a new site-specific forecasting service for wind farms and wind energy production, designed to help generators make accurate short-term assessments of power production.
