The Austin Local Solar Advisory Committee (LSAC) approved the strategic plan for Austin's solar industry development last week (Nov. 1, 2012) and it was a unanimous vote of the members of LSAC.

 

Great news for the Texas Capitol! 

The Austin Local Solar Advisory Committee (LSAC) approved the strategic plan for Austin’s solar industry development last week (November 1, 2012) and it was a unanimous vote of the members of LSAC.

The plan will become a public document in the near future. In the meantime, here are key points from the plan:

  1. The City of Austin has less than 40 MW of local solar PV since we began the solar program in 2004. The LSAC has approved a plan to increase this amount to the range of 200-300MW of local solar projects by 2020.
  2. On average, this would be 20 to 32 MW of new solar PV projects per year for the next 8 years compared to an average of 5 MW per year of local solar PV projects to date.
  3. In addition to local solar, the LSAC plan calls for an additional 200-300 MW of other utility-scale solar, so the total plan amount ranges from 400 MW to 600 MW of solar PV projects. This represents approximately 5 to 9% of Austin’s projected annual energy requirement.
  4. With this plan, the City of Austin can retain its leadership position in solar and further create a sustainable community of jobs and solar energy.
