Employees of groSolar Band Together to Help Elderly Flood Victims
Bethel, VT Corporate office employees of Vermont-based groSolar spent time last week helping two families clean up their homes ravaged by the flooding and damage left behind by Hurricane Irene. While it's been nearly three weeks since Irene leveled houses, washed out roads and left hundreds of Vermonters without homes, a great need still awaits, said Jeff Wolfe, CEO and Co Founder, groSolar.
As a long time resident of Vermont and founder of a national company which started and is still based right here in Vermont, the decision to help those folks with the heavy lifting and cleaning was the least we could do. It's our responsibility to help our friends, neighbors and loved ones, especially in such a time of need."
Corporate office employees of Vermont-based groSolar spent time last week helping two families clean up their homes ravaged by the flooding and damage left behind by Hurricane Irene. While it’s been nearly three weeks since Irene leveled houses, washed out roads and left hundreds of Vermonters without homes, a great need still awaits, said Jeff Wolfe, CEO and Co Founder, groSolar. “This storm was catastrophic. The images and information you see on television, hear on the radio and read in the paper, do no justice to the true magnitude of the damage left behind,” said Wolfe. “As a long time resident of Vermont and founder of a national company which started and is still based right here in Vermont, the decision to help those folks with the heavy lifting and cleaning was the least we could do. It’s our responsibility to help our friends, neighbors and loved ones, especially in such a time of need.” One group of groSolar employees helped an elderly couple empty their belongings from their mobile home, which filled with rising flood water before being swept off its foundation and dropped back to the ground. The home and nearly everything inside were a complete loss. A second groSolar team helped a woman clean up the main floor of her two-story house near the river, which wasflooded to 3 feet over the first floor. Bethel, a small Vermont river town located in a valley, was one of the state’s hardest hit towns. groSolar chose Bethel because it was one of only a few areas with such a great need, accessible by car for employees of the White River Junction offices. While the state is making good progress cleaning up the damage, the focus now is on rebuilding and the needs are primarily in the area of skilled labor, such as carpenters, electricians and plumbers. “It truly was a humbling experience. To watch groSolar employees step out of their comfort zone, most of which exists behind a desk, on the phone or in some cases, on the roof, and dive into a foreign environment for a good cause, really made me proud of my team and home state,” said Wolfe.
