With Egypt implementing 750MW worth of wind energy by 2014 and the Moroccan Agency for the Development of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency joining forces with the DESERTEC Foundation to help develop renewables, the momentum of wind power in the region is rapid.
Speaking in the run up to Green Power Conferences inaugural Wind Power North Africa Conference and Exhibition Giuseppe de Beni, Managing Director, Italgen, stated that ”the potential in the region is significant. The Governments (starting from Morocco, Egypt, etc) have defined ambitious targets in terms of installed capacity and this means they are fully aware of this. But unfortunately the projects actually implemented in the last few years identify that the sector is still well below its potential”
With this in mind Khalid Benhamou, Managing Director, Sahara Wind, Morocco has said “the growth of wind energy is essentially limited by grid/systems absorption capabilities. Frameworks aimed at developing an industrial integration of the components of a wind power industry will therefore condition the pace and deployment of wind power projects in the region”
Looking at both the current market conditions, projects in place and those in development stages the Wind Power North Africa conference, commencing in just over 3 weeks, has drawn in speakers including Giuseppe de Beni, Managing Director, Italgen, Khalid Benhamou, Managing Director, Sahara Wind and H.E Fouad Douiri, Minister, Ministry of Energy, Mines & Mineral Resources, Morocco to discuss the market potential and ways in which it can and will inevitably develop.
