World Biofuels Markets Brazil Releases Results of First Brazilian Bioenergy Survey & Award Shortlist

Results show belief in cellulosic ethanol is high and Oil Majors will be strong partner as industry develops next generation biofuel technologies

Green Power Conferences
September 17, 2012

In advance of World Biofuels Markets Brazil conference and the co-located Biomass Power Generation Brazil, both being held 18-19 September in São Paulo, the results of the first ever Brazilian Bioenergy Survey were released recently.

Based on responses from industry stakeholders from across Brazil, the survey showed an overarching industry belief that cellulosic ethanol, particularly made from sugarcane bagasse, will be the most heavily invested in, widely produced, and used next generation fuel in the country over the next decade. The survey respondents also overwhelmingly believe that the country’s Oil Majors will play a supportive role in developing and investing in new biofuels technologies, rather than sitting on the sidelines waiting for a technology to win out.

Key results from the first ever Brazilian Bionenergy Survey include:

  • More than two-thirds of survey respondents believed between 25 and 50 percent of the Brazilian ethanol supply will come from next generation technologies and feedstocks by 2020.
  • Industry stakeholders overwhelmingly thought cellulosic ethanol will receive the majority of investment (67%), with energy crops such as jatropha or palm (20%) and synthetic drop-in oil replacements (10%) receiving less certainty, while less than two percent of those surveyed believe algae and municipal solid waste will see large scale investment.
  • Nearly ninety percent of respondents believe Brazil’s Oil Majors will be a “dedicated partner, investor and technology developer”, while ten percent believe these companies will focus resources to conduct technology research and development internally. Less than one percent of the respondents believed that these companies will be sideline observers, only waiting to acquire technology when they are proven out.
  • When considering future biofuel volumes, nearly half of the surveyed experts (44%) believed cellulosic ethanol would be the highest volume next generation biofuel produced in Brazil by 2020, with one-fifth of industry stakeholders believing both aviation fuels and biodiesel would be the most highly produced fuel. Biobutanol garnered ten percent of the votes, while less than one percent believed black liquor-derived bio-DME would scale to high volumes.
  • When asked what the greatest threat to the future success of the Brazilian biofuels industry would be, one-third of respondent believe it will be the continued low price of fossil fuels and another one-third believe it will be the ongoing bottleneck in sugarcane rootstock replacement. Approximately ten percent believed both imported U.S. ethanol and poor government policies would be barriers to success, while only one percent believes low or stalled investment will be the largest threat.
