Will the Hollywood Sign Go Solar?

April 22, 2009
Los Angeles, CA Today marks a historic Earth Day, the caretakers of the Hollywood Sign assembled at the Roosevelt Hotel to consider adding solar panels to the most well known modern cultural icon in the world.

Mike Bonifer co-founder of GameChangers had an idea of "solar paneling the Hollywood Sign" a concept that has grown like wildfire into a grassroots movement that's sweeping across the nation. 'Solar Panel the Hollywood Sign’ is a community of people who believe it’s a good idea to have one of the most famous landmarks in the world become one of its most powerful symbols of sustainability. "Installing solar power at the Hollywood Sign will enlighten and inspire people around the world about the potential of solar power to change the energy game.", said Bonifer.

Working in collaboration with the the communities in the vicinity of the sign, and thousands of supporters from all walks of business and life, the group proposes moving the Hollywood Sign from zero production to positive production of electricity using solar technology. “There are many parties we have to interact with to gain support for this project. The challenge is each organization has their individual agendas that we have take into consideration, it takes a careful balancing act.” said Rafael Quezada, an architectural designer-builder with 30 years experience working with city and county agencies nationwide.

During the meeting, four 3D photo realistic renderings of how solar photovoltaic technology could coexist with the famous sign and the environment were shared with the Hollywood Sign Trust. "We wanted to keep this conversation very open by displaying a gamet of technology. For example, one of the renderings featured nano solar paint that could turn the facade of the Hollywood Sign itself into a solar power generator," said Deep Patel, Founder & CEO of GoGreenSolar.com "We also shared more standard solutions such as a pole-mounted and hillside ground-mounted solar array that are common practice in the solar industry."

The L.A. community/entertainment spotlight has been focused on solar energy even before World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour on March 28 and, along with an ensemble cast of thousands, it will continue to light the path of this global movement after Earth Day until the Hollywood Sign is illuminated. The end result of the movement is creating a global symbol that catapults Los Angeles and the entertainment community as true, credible leaders in the planet's sustainable future.
