CSP Today: Interview with Anoop Mathur from Terrafore

By CSP Today

New Delhi, India

Ahead of the First Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit India, CSP Today catches up with Anoop Mathur from Terrafore, who will be speaking at the Summit.

CSP Today: What are the main opportunities for the CSP companies in India?

Anoop Mathur: It is the best and opportunistic time to install CSP for utility scale power and perhaps direct steam generation in process industries.  In the near future CSP used for distributed power generation will be transformational for rural and small industries.
Companies entering in this sector now will have a competitive edge and will be best placed to grow as the market develops worldwide.

CSP Today: How do you think the "New Solar Mission" will change the CSP industry worldwide?

Anoop Mathur: For India the goals set out in the solar mission can be a catalyst for change.
A measure of sustainable growth in the near future for any developing or developed country will be how well they have adopted and leveraged renewable energy.  The investment made now in this technology will bear dividends with sustained growth.

CSP Today: What is the biggest challenge facing CSP developer in India? How can it be overcome?

Anoop Mathur: A knee-jerk reaction will be to say financing is a big challenge.  I think the biggest challenge is investing in appropriate technology that can be sustained with indigenous skills and resources.  This is one area where high technology does not give you a competitive edge.  Energy from my technology is not better than the energy from your technology.

CSP Today: How will the 1st Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit India help the industry move forward?

Anoop Mathur: Provide first hand information to investors, a platform to flesh out and set a research agenda for tackling fundamental technical issues, a forum to assess the skills and training needs, and a launch pad for informed policy making for institutions.  Educators, researchers, investors, government bodies must leverage this summit to form cross disciplined networks.

CSP Today: Why are you speaking at this event and what will you be discussing at the event?

Anoop Mathur: Having been through the 1970s energy crisis and having researched all types of renewable energy technologies, I strongly believe CSP is the right solution in the long run.  It is efficient, scalable, dispatchable, and sustainable.  It can be readily manufactured and implemented with indigenous resources.  It has a best potential to be more cost effective and environmentally acceptable than fossil based solutions.

The First Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit India is taking place on September 7-8 in New Delhi.
