Don't Miss The Great Solar Debate: Where Does the Global Solar Industry Stand? ×

City of Clayton Continues Its Leadership in Sustainability

With the installation of the largest solar array canopy in Missouri at its Police Station, Clayton maintains leadership in green initiatives and its status as the first EPA Green Power Community in Missouri.

July 05, 2012

At 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, U.S. Congressman Russ Carnahan, Department of Natural Resources Director Sara Pauley and City of Clayton Mayor Linda Goldstein will be on hand for the installation of the first panel of a160.23kW DC solar array at Clayton's new Police Station, the largest non-utility owned solar panel project in Missouri.

The Heritage Building at 10 South Brentwood is being renovated by Paric
Corporation and will become the city’s new Police Station. The renovations are
being done according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
standards and will achieve Silver level LEED certification which is required by
ordinance for all public buildings in Clayton. Clayton and Kansas City, were the
first cities in Missouri to establish these requirements. The solar array, which is
needed to meet Silver level LEED standards, will be the largest solar array in
Missouri and will provide all the energy needs of the parking garage and offset a
portion of the main building’s needs.

“The city is committed to being a regional leader in green energy solutions and
encourages projects that promote the efficient use of energy,” said Mayor Linda
Goldstein. “The use of solar on our new police station reaffirms our focus on using
the latest technologies to keep us energy efficient.”

Clayton’s exceptional commitment to green initiatives was recently recognized
by the St. Louis County Municipal League with its Leadership in Sustainability and
Environmental Stewardship award at the League’s first annual Muni Awards
event.

Clayton has been at the forefront of many environmental initiatives. Along with
the start of the residential recycling program in 1997, Clayton established an Ecology and Environmental Awareness Committee. The city was one of the first
in St. Louis County to implement single-stream recycling and now sets a standard
for recycling. In 2009, Clayton was the second city in St. Louis County to adopt a
citywide ban on smoking in public places, along with Ballwin.
In 2011, Clayton became the first Green Power Community in Missouri and one of
only 34 in the country to join a prestigious group that achieves the 3% green
power requirement designated by the EPA. Along with the installation of
Clayton’s largest solar array so far at U.S. Bank, these solar projects help the city
retain that designation.

Brightergy, a leading Missouri solar development and finance firm, was awarded
the contract to install the solar array at the Police Station’s parking garage.
The Heritage Building renovation is expected to be completed by the end of the
year or early next year.
