Solving the Great Lakes dissolved Oxygen problem with science has the benifit of also creating a renewable energy resource by utilizing Hydrostatic Pressure Pipes to power a Hydroair/electric turbine.
Dissolved oxygen levels in Lake Erie can be cured with science by the use of Hydrology, Atmospheric Pressure and Low Pressure Turbine Dynamics to oxygenate, scrub, and clean the water of gas and other impurities locked up in the water of the Central Basin glacial sump; thus, beginning a circulation process to rejuvenate all of Lake Erie.
The new Hydro/air science is an application of Atmosphere and Hydrology Science. A special design Hydrostatic Pressure Pipe is used to pump and pressurize the water with compressed air.
On the surface of Lake Erie there is 1 atmosphere of pressure which is 14.7 lbs. per square inch or 2,116 pounds per square foot of pressure. On the Earths surface, there is literally more than a ton of atmospheric pressure on each of our shoulders each day! As we descend in the water, every 34 feet is another atmosphere of pressure because of the added weight of the body of water and the atmosphere above.
Lake Erie is 210 feet at the deepest part which is 6.17 atmospheres or 91 lbs. per sq. in. pressure on the bottom. That is 13,060 lbs. per sq. ft. in pressure, under water, at 210 ft.
For example, if an open pipe were lowered to 200 ft. below the surface, the outside bottom pressure is greater than the column of water pressure inside the pipe. Water would rise to the surface because the weight of water inside the pipe is less than the outside pressure which squeezes from the bottom to the top. There would be flow; however, the water would only be exposed to oxygenation after it is on the surface and exposed to the atmosphere. That process would not serve the purpose of oxygenation; circulation is not a cure in itself.
The Oxygen has been squeezed out of the Hydrogen and decay organic gases have taken Oxygen’s place in the molecular make-up. Those molecules need to be smashed to release the gas and to replace Oxygen in the H2O makeup.
To remedy that situation, compressed air is pumped into the 12 inch Hydrostatic Pressure Pipe at 190 feet at 82 lbs. per sq. in. and forms a compressed air pocket inside the pipe which is at a lower pressure than the outside water pressure. In essence, we are reversing the atmospheric pressure back into itself and as violently as the atmospheric pressure pushes down on the outside of the pipe; inside the pipe the hydrosphere pressure is violently pushing the air pocket to the top of the pipe. This hydrospheric squeeze sucks un-oxygenated sump water into the pipe from the bottom and the oxygenation process begins as we drain the swamp from the bottom to the top.
The top of the 12 in. pipe is reduced to a 4 in. pipe to increase pressure inside the pipe and to allow a consistent free flow of water and compressed air that is released into a specially designed water/air turbine that further scrubs and violently oxygenates the water. The excess gas and air is released back into the atmosphere and the oxygenated and cleaned water returns to the lake in the top layer which will cool the shallower water and create circulation throughout the lake system.
Lake Erie is a big lake and the sump area is quite large typical of glacial bowls of the Great Lakes; all the lakes have the same problem of dissolved oxygen that effects health of the entire lakes system.
Solving the dissolved oxygen problem with science has additional rewards. As the compressed air and water is squeezed inside the Hydrostatic Pressure Pipe to the surface, the air expands and increases the pressure inside the pipe. The head pressure on the open 4 inch pipe is extremely high and the water and air will scream out at a very high velocity. This high velocity of water and air can be turned into a renewable energy by releasing the pressure into a specially designed turbine to create electricity. The cost of millions to fix dissolved oxygen levels in Lake Erie and the Great Lakes can be repaid with Hydro/air multi-megawatt electric generation. This completely new deep water renewable energy resource has never been discovered or utilized until now.
There are two options in installing an oxygenation / renewable energy operation on Lake Erie.
One option is to use a construction derrick barge to operate 60 or more 12 in. Hydrostatic Pressure Pipes during the calm months and leave in the winter months.
The other option will pay for the construction and operation of a deep water permanent plant using the Hydrostatic Pressure Pipes as support for construction. In that manner, hundreds of pressure pipes could be used to move and oxygenate a substantial amount of water and the circulation would be year-round. The permanent renewable hydorair-electric energy generated would be year-round.
Hundreds of Hydrosphere Pressure Pipes pump a massive amount of water but in comparison to the size of Lake Erie it would only be a trickle. The movement of a trickle of oxygenated water creates a healthy and clean circulation of water and temperature throughout the entire lake. Over time, Lake Erie will return to a healthy state and will remain health as long as the hydorair-electric plant is operating.
My job as a scientist, inventor and model maker in solving the oxygenated water problem in Lake Erie should be over, but it isn’t. We live in a culture where science is ignored. I need the collective cooperation of all parties interested in solving the problem. I need the individual effort from local leaders and a collective effort of organizations to take action in order for the plan to be a reality.
Coming up with a solution to the Lake Erie oxygenation problem is simple when you put science first compared to dealing with the EPA, Corp of Army Engineers, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and other government entities. They are necessary for approval, financing, construction and operation of such a plant on Lake Erie. I am at the service to those who would drive such a courageous campaign to clean up Lake Erie and the Great Lakes (there is money in renewable energy), however, that is not my job and I have other important inventions to work on.
Interested individuals and organizations have the science before them; they will have to do that job to make the concept a reality. I have filed for a US Patent for the Hydrostatic Pressure Pipe and the Baker Hydro/air Turbine and I am at your service.
