2GreenEnergy.com has released another in its ongoing series of reports elucidating the challenges we face in our efforts to migrate from fossil fuels to renewable energy. 2GreenEnergy provides industry interviews, technology analysis, scientific and engineering consulting research, as well as educational and investment services for the business of clean energy.
The survey of 200 respondents that 2GreenEnergy.com conducted in August, 2011 attempted to contrast the behavior of the top two economic powers on Earth, noting that, where the U.S. seems mired in lethargy, China seems to be taking far bolder steps in the direction of renewables. But precisely what lies behind this flurry of activity? In other words, Why exactly is China making such a robust investment in clean energy?
2GreenEnergy offers the report, written by its editor, Craig Shields, summarizing the answers. Shields says, "We aimed at creating a broader understanding of the challenges we face in making this vitally important transition. However, the answers are far from simple; there is a tightly woven set of inter-related pressures that appear to be driving China."

• In China's estimation, is clean energy any different than any other market? Doesn't China want to dominate everything?
• How is China using its investment in this space to create jobs – and thus social stability?
• How sincerely are the Chinese about addressing the very serious public health issues that are directly caused by the pollution generated by burning hydrocarbons?
• It's true, of course, that China isn't dominated by lawyers and corporate lobbyists. Is this significant in their approach to embracing alternative energy?
• Hasn't China always displayed incredible patience and tenacity? Is China's general skill at planning finally paying off?
• Is this a moral issue? Does China want to do what's right, or are their motives purely pragmatic?
• Some say the U.S. has severely compromised its national security in its devotion to oil. It is possible that China simply refused to do this?
Here are a few quotes from respondents, showing the incredible diversity of opinion on the subject:
• China invests in renewables solely because of its own needs and concerns; they are the ultimate capitalists; renewables mean energy security, manufacturing dominance and eventually world market dominance.
• China must keep its 10% growth rate or potentially suffer civil unrest. I have witnessed that potential for civil unrest first hand. The country is caught in a growth cycle that they must continue in the face of limited resources.
• This is driven by serious health issues directly related to extremely poor environmental policies in the last generation.
• So long as the U.S. stays paralyzed politically, China can press its advantage. China wins, we lose. The U.S. does not support renewables here because the "right people" here do not totally control it yet.
• America is such a young country, with citizens having very little pride or knowledge of history. China is not just a command economy but also a nation with thousands of years of history. Its culture and economic thinking are almost completely opposite of ours, based on millennia of development and monoculturalism.
• China, as a developing country, has a relatively newer infrastructure system, which makes it easier for them to enter into the renewable energy industry than developed countries with older, aged energy infrastructure.
• The government of the PRC has no regard for altruism, or 'green' philosophy, except as propaganda.
• China invests in renewables for the same economic reason the rest of the world would be smart to do so. It puts the generation of needed energy within the control of the country generating it.
Shields concludes with a few pages of his own beliefs on the subject. "This is simply a perfect storm, in which every single factor has aligned to push China in the direction of renewable energy," he says. "And there is a great deal for the U.S. to learn here. As we Americans become more aware of what’s happening around us, and why it's happening, we will become more able to play an active role in shaping our energy destiny."
