Alstom to Supply Hydro Equipment at Lower Mattagami Hydropower Complex

LEVALLOIS-PERRET, France Alstom has signed a C110 million (US105.4 million) contract with Kiewit Alarie Partnership to supply three turbine generator sets to Ontario Power Generation's Lower Mattagami hydro project in Northern Ontario.

Under the contract, Alstom will supply three hydro turbine generator sets at the new Smoky Falls Generating Station, which will replace the existing station. When installed, the new turbine generators will have a combined capacity of 267 megawatts. Smoky Falls Generating Station is one of four stations to be redeveloped as part of OPG's C2.6 billion Lower Mattagami Project.

In total, the Lower Mattagami project will produce approximately 440 megawatts of new power, bringing the hydro complex's total capacity to about 924 megawatts, OPG reported.

Alstom will design and supply new generating units, including propeller turbines, vertical generators, static excitation systems, speed governor systems and protection and control systems. The turbine runners and generator bars will be manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Quebec.

In other news, Chilean utility Colbun recently signed a US123 million contract with Alstom for three turbines for the Angostura hydropower project being developed in Chile, wire services reported.
