Fredericia, Denmark [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] DONG Energy and Wind Estate A/S have completed the second phase of the Overgard onshore wind farm, making it Denmark's largest such development the company says. The second phase added 10 new 2.3-megawatt (MW) machines next to 20 turbines already on the site. Situated some 25 km northwest of Randers in East Jutland, Overgard has a capacity of 63 MW.

With an increase in turbine capacity to 2.3 MW and blade length to 47 meters, as opposed to the 2 MW machines already installed at the site with 36 metre blades, the 10 new turbines will produce as much power as the 20 older ones. In addition, DONG says, the construction has allowed a for a tidy-up of the East Jutland landscape, with 35 older turbines from across the region being decommissioned, as their output was more than compensated for by the 10 new turbines at Overgård.

“With the construction of Denmark’s largest onshore wind farm, DONG Energy is reaching yet another important milestone in wind energy development,” said Anders Eldrup, CEO of DONG Energy. “Next year we will be following up with the world’s largest offshore wind farm,” he said in reference to the 1 GW London Array project in which it holds a 50% stake.
