Unfortunately, as in the '70s when subsidized wind & solar were naively touted as a way to deal with OPEC, nothing has changed, except local solar PV has become cheaper & more efficient. The sad realities for massed solar 'farms' remain:

a) thermal solar is inefficient because its output is tied to thermal engines with poor thermodynamic efficiency;

b) its product is delivered with ongoing, permanent long-transmission loss of about 10%;

c) its land & species impacts are unacceptable;

d) its maintenance is high;

e) its subsidies encourage inefficient business models and taxpayer support of particular investors/vendors; and

f) it's inadequate for future needs, in comparison with locally-distributed solar on existing structures, which indeed is capable of supplying all peak demands.

Time to stop fibbing to the public on all this.

But we shouldn't discount the ability of CSP to utilise thermal storage that changes the operational economics. We should possibly be thinking of how we can better utilise energy in all its forms. Thermal energy, not just for the production of electricity, is requires. CSP for desal as byproduct of electricity generation should be explored. CSP for steam production to industrial plants as a byproduct of electricity generation should be explored.
