Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is considering a bill recently approved by the state's legislature that would help improve dam safety.

Massachusetts passed the bill earlier this month, and if approved by Patrick, US$17 million would be allocated for the repair or removal of unsafe, abandoned or useless dams.

The bill would also require state officials to provide emergency action plans for all dams deemed to be "high" or "significant" hazard.

The legislation will establish a loan program for dam repair and removal, while allowing municipalities to issue bonds for dam dismantling.

State Sen. Marc R. Pacheco proposed the legislation in May 2012.

Patrick now has until Thursday to approve or veto it.
