DOE Offering $20mn for Projects That Integrate Solar and Fossil Fuels

Renewable Energy World Editors
December 31, 2012  |  3 Comments

The U.S. Energy Department (DOE) announced $20 million in new funding for two to four projects that will help integrate concentrating solar power (CSP) systems with fossil fuel power plants. The DOE seeks applications from industry, universities, and national laboratories.

These hybrid systems leverage the infrastructure of fossil fuel plants such as turbine and transmission systems, helping to reduce the cost of solar-generated electricity and bring CSP plants online quicker. The projects selected will work to design, build and test cost-competitive integrated CSP-fossil fuel power generating systems.

The new funding aims to overcome near-term market and technological barriers for cost-effective CSP hybrid system implementation. Additionally, CSP hybrid technology may help enable further cost reductions in stand-alone CSP projects and spur innovations across the broader concentrating solar power supply chain.

If interested, act quickly as a letter of intent is due by Jan 14, 2013 with the full application due in mid-March, 2013.

This move will offset revenue loss from declining petrochemical supply. A wise choice to make!

This is a smart move to encourage innovation in the CSP technology. In fact, I have been promoting this idea in India since quite some time. In fact, this could be applied to process industry using heat energy as well. It is very much possible to innovate CSP technology with twin objectives of leveraging the infrastructures of fossil fuel power plants and reducing the capital costs for CSP plants.DOE has taken right decision to encourage this idea. However, the DOE should not limit encouraging only the US based industries / universities / national laboratories but extend support to those from other countries as well. DOE could also consider individuals with innovative ideas from US as well as from overseas.

integrating concentrating solar power (CSP) systems with fossil fuel power plants is indeed an innovative approach. DOE should be complemented for encouraging this concept.
