Offshore wind is still up to 50% more expensive than onshore installations. But in many countries, like the UK and Germany, offshore resources are the only viable option. However, in other areas of the world (such as the US) where there are substantial onshore resources, there will continue to be very limited installation of offshore turbines.

I would agree that the industry will continue its current trend of rapidly scaling up turbine size. There's no technical reason we won't see 10MW machines going into service before the end of the decade. However, I would disagree with the conventional wisdom that these commercial machines will be direct drive designs. Due primarily to cost factors, the next generation of large commercial turbines will continue to use gearboxes.

The biggest barrier is the fact that as wind energy approaches the 10% level by energy, grid operations become unstable, and wind power curtailment becomes a necessity. For wind to continue to expand, wind farms will require payment for energy lost due to forced curtailment.

The public will rebel at paying for energy not produced!
