India's 1,000-MW Karcham Wangtoo hydroelectric project has been registered under the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The U.N.'s CDM is an initiative intended to prevent climate change and comply with emissions standards dictated by the Kyoto Protocol.

The Karcham Wangtoo hydropower facility, which is located on the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh, is one of the largest hydro plants to ever receive CDM designation, according to operator Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd.

The company also operates the 30-MW Baspa II and 400-MW Vishnuprayag facilities and says Karcham Wangtoo is the largest privately owned hydropower project in India.

HydroWorld.com reported in June 2011 that Karcham Wangtoo was already generating power with one turbine and was expected to be fully operational by August 2011.
