Finally this country realizes the problems created by favoring wind and solar over other renewables. But far more insidious is giving monopolies to utilities. We should be allowed to enter the market without first gaining acceptance from the utility monompolies.

I think you will find the government support to "fracking" was limited to research and development, as opposed to providing X dollars for barrel of oil produced.

The government needs to be removed from the usurped role of picking winners and losers in the marketplace. Good riddance to the "production tax credit". The government (particularly the Department of Energy) needs to return to the original and proper role of R&D support. Further, "clean energy" needs to be stopped from raiding the taxpayer's pockets.

The author should not have ignored the "serious environmental concerns related to gas fracking." Fracking didnt take off until after Dick Cheney got a provision in the 2005 Energy Act that exempted it from from the Safe Drinking Water Act and other environmental laws. It is ridiculous that gas companies can dump unknown chemicals into the water supply. The Republicans almost always solve resource depletion by relaxing environmental laws instead of ending the monopolies that are blocking the innovation needed for developing alternatives.

Keller- I agree with your comment about the role federal government funding should play in the energy market. The government should not be in the business of "picking winners and losers". The most effective use of federal taxpayer dollars is to help bring promising technologies to a market-ready state. That's the stated mandate of DOE's ARPA-E programs.

ARPA-E does not fund basic research or applications of established technology. Instead ARPA-E provides relatively high levels of matching funds to start-up companies that have a promising energy related technology that has already undergone some lab testing. This type of transitional financial support is critical for high-tech start-ups since this is the point in the business cycle where many of them get stalled. The amount of funding needed is too large for angel investors, and the technology is too early stage for institutional investors.

Lastly, while I appreciate this is an opinion piece, I wish the author would refrain from using phrases like "The anti-clean tech crowd in the U.S......". Honestly, does the author expect us to believe there are "crowds" in the US that are actively working to prevent the development of "clean tech"? While I don't know of anyone that is "anti-clean tech", I do know of many that are "anti-artificially high energy costs".

The production tax credit (PTC) needs to go! If some wind jobs are eliminated, good. At $135,295 per Job after the extreme subsidies to wind, we can't afford those people. http://www.instituteforenergyresearch.org/2010/01/08/135295-per-job-obama-announces-2-3-billion-to-create-17k-green-jobs/

The UK, the Netherlands, and recently China announced that they cannot afford to continue the subsidies to this intermittant source. China announced in March, 2012 that they will drop non-performing wind and solar in favor of nuclear. Shouldn't we pay attention to their experience, to their mistakes?

Has anyone seen the rioting in Europe because of extreme cuts to citizens because of irresponsible past spending, including in the case of Spain, wind?
