Good article. As an EE, I have to say racking is not sexy. But as PV prices have shrunk, the balance of system , maintenance, and reliability move from important to more important. I have always noticed the great enthusiasm people have for planting a garden, but it takes only about 1 year for people to lose interest. Many consumers and small businesses will be the same way with their PV installation.

Yes. Where are the 40-50 plug and play manufacturers that are competing for do-it yourself prefabbed solar kits? Why aren't hundreds of various types of kits available for consumers at Wal Mart, Home Depot or Lowes? Something is very wrong with the American energy system when clean free power from the energy of the sun is snubbed for fossil fuels.

Can you please provide a citation for this:

"With maintenance costs running an estimated 2-3 times the initial project installation cost"

This number is far higher than what we're seeing in the field.
