For US Solar is a big business and very crucial in its energy mix.

Yes, U.S. firms need to compete in the renewable energy business. I'm not so sure the federal government needs to help to fund research, etc. To foster an environment for entrepreneurs to pursue these endeavors - yes.
By the way, re Mr. Chu's comment about the airplane industry - did the Wright brothers really "invent" the airplane? I thought they were the first to successfully fly a "heavier-than-air" machine. Lilienthal (Germany, nee Russia)and others were just as persistent and knowledgeable about the rudiments of flying. No surprise that the European air industry "took off" first.

I think all he is saying is lets get to work and win...as for Gov support, Oil gets Billions and that keeps that fuel profitable at least for the Oil Companies and price per gallon lower on Domestic Oil. allowing oversized profits disproportionate to the economy for Oil Companies. This is why more Alternate products are not invested in. China is not the enemy, it is the Oil Lobby and the thieves in Congress who get pet projects funded by Oil money and that gets them elected.
I dont think oil companies are very patriotic, they are more concerned with looking patriotic by selling fuel to their largest customer, the US Military. If oil is so smart, why are most Military Bases using Solar as the newer choice.

Seems to me the "clean energy battle" is a mythical struggle the US can easily sit out. We have ample supplies of affordable and reasonably clean energy. There is no particularly compelling reason for the taxpayer to get involved in the whole renewable energy flimflam operation. If private investors think they can make money then knock go ahead, knock yourselves out.

FYI Grechick: try running a fighter bomber, tank, destroyer or helicopter on solar energy. Won't work.

Keller,
The Military is in process of a beta test using Bio Diesel and already has installed Solar on most every Base. I am not suggesting all/everyone do Solar, in fact the Dept. of Defense suggests that Alternate Power sources are mandatory for National Security. Why fly a Jet to fight a Country that is using our money from Oil to fight us! US sends Billions of dollars to Middle East for fuel. Solar is not the only Sustainable clean fuel, Wave Energy can generate Power, as can Wind. Keep in mind, we give Billions in Tax dollars to Oil Companies!
