Why must RE investments be solely RE?

Why isn't RE and RE/EE the sexy addition to more prosaic investments? Like boring old, low-profile commercial buildings with their expansive roofing, so close to a customer base? While we're at it, why not combine multiple solar benefits to get the most oou of the investment?
