The only correction i would make to the CEOs speech;" first major utility in the continental U.S. with solar power as its top power source, receiving 30 percent of the energy that it delivers to its customers from solar power" is: 90 percent not 30 percent....

Greetings from Florida,

Great job with Dallas! See, you can be successful outside of Calif. We look forward to another tremendous opportunity to learn and network at the Orlando SPI - 2012. Thanks again for all your efforts to bring it to the Sunshine State!

i used to think how this century from 2011 to 2030 ...
how many struggles faced ...but let me live in ultimate paece with solar power ..i do not want to be in Japan in 2031 , these japanese are wonderful people who will endure anything...
best luck to solar dreams

There problem with solar prediction - price tag for real KWh and storage. When I tell REAL KWh, I mean 10% of installed rated power is actually utilized. When we talk about storage there are another 50% loss at best. So it leads to huge price tag for FREE energy.
Don't be in a rush. There another source of energy and storage emerging. Static pressure utilization for deep water (starting from 10m depth) and compressed air static pressure as storage instead of batteries. I developed this technique, huge power and low price tag - this is a way of future energy development, in complement to other sources. Let market decide, do not rush, you see result of rush in Japan nuclear disaster.
Info about static pressure utilization development will follow in Renewableenergyworld if requested, also look for our press release "deep water static pressure to energy converter"

We'll all be dead in 2031 due to the filth in the air and water. The SEPA CEO should mark the transition in 5 years where we really need to be.

Just came back from SPI in Dallas. Amazing array of renewable technology on display.
I had a connecting flight from Houston to Dallas and back to Houston before flying on to LA and then back to Portland. I hate to think of how much oil we burned just to get me there and back but that's another issue, although directly related to what I'm about to say.

As I flew from Houston to Dallas there was not a single spot on the ground that was not covered with massive, glowing lights. From horizon to horizon it was the same. I began to think of how much fossil fuel was being burned to produce that many mega watts? I then started to think of how much of that energy was simply wasted. Wasted on poor lighting, excess lighting etc etc.

I saw the same massive glow of lights when over Phoenix and most of the LA basin. I then thought that even if all the energy used during sunlight hours was generated by solar, you would still need all that fossil fuel just to keep this glowing mass of energy consumption going at night. Expensive assets used only half the day??

It's at times like these when a thinking person begins to question the sanity of how we live. How out of step and unsustainable most of what we call civilization really is. Until we all begin to question the basic assumptions we have, that trying to keep this dying animal alive with massive infusions of new solar energy, may not be the best choice.Perhaps we all need to begin thinking of a lifestyle where allot of our current reality goes away. Can it be done? Don't know? Of course it will never happen if we keep thinking the current reality is sustainable and healthy. An old Indian chief was asked by a 19th century reporter what he thought of the white man. He stated 'Very smart' 'Not very wise'

A time machine back to the 18th century. I'm flying the same space. Only a few scattered camp fires. Advanced 21st century? Backward, primitive 18th century? Only time will tell.

William Fitch -
Sadly, this appears to be the case. I was one of the comments censured.

I think the RE crowd takes itself a little too seriously at times. There is nothing wrong with appreciating an intelligent woman (or a man) who is also a bit of eye-candy. Danica McKellar, anyone?

I saw the same issue when I was with Mensa several years ago. It involved an "artistic" cover photo of their monthly newsletter. Basically it was a black-and-white photo of a nude woman sitting on a tree stump in the snow. Sitting upright, flower in her lap, nothing distasteful or obscene about. Technically it looked like a first-year art school project - no big whoop.

Jesus! You should've heard the row brought up by that silly picture. People screaming and shouting about degrading the integrity of the Mensa organization, objectification of women, condemnation of the photographer and the editor who printed it, etc. It really opened my eyes to how the intelligensia can take themselves so seriously they absolutely lose it at seeing a pair of tits.

Of course, these are the same people who would prattle on about the influence of the nudes made by the ancient Greeks or Picasso. They will extol the virtues of the human art form, as long as they don't have to actually see it.

Ultimately, I saw the hypocrisy on the whole shooting match and dropped my membership at that time.

We need to have a grin on our face when it comes to the Big Picture ideas we chuckleheads spout about on these blogs. Put your two cents in, but do it with a chuckle. Nothing tears down the status quo like a good fart joke.

Or a nice pair of boobies.
Ciao, big guy.

Larry - The only dent in your philosophy is the natural expansion of the human race.

Yeah, a lot less fires in the 18th Century, but also a lot less people. We hairless apes have a penchant for breeding like rabbits, but the sticking point is our adaptability. If we couldn't shape our world around us, giving us the chance to live anywhere we choose, there would definitely be only those few fires you imagined.
(I'm assuming you imagined. Do you still have that time machine? What's tomorrow's Lotto numbers?)

But changing the human race's lifestyle means changing it's adaptability. And the only way that's going to happen is some cataclysmic disaster. Something will have to force us into a new lifestyle mode, or simply reduce the population to a new low.
My money is on the Avian Flu.

I live out in Las Vegas, and we always remark about how expansive desert living has become. One of the common conversations we have is, what do you think the first pioneers who crossed the desert said when they saw how huge and empty it was? My common response is, "Well, they'd probably wonder who built all these damn casinos."

Sam - Get yourself some Prozac, fella, no need to be so down. Life is gonna be just fine, it's just going to be a little crowded, that's all. Say, do you own any birds?

Hi Doug/Larry:

Its not the RE crowd just like it is not the red or blue that's responsible for the situation of wealth disparity. Business, especially corporations are sterile extruded machines that do not promote anything human outside those 'processes' which can be directly tied to profit. Being hierarchical structures, those 'above' any other level by assignment or control do not tolerate anything outside their own personal tastes. So the manager can 'joke' to his subordinates, but not the reverse etc.. Besides that there is never a shortage of finding people with a stick up their butt. Additionally, the story picked up a hotlink on TreeHugger so they wanted to keep the stories 'image' clean and uncluttered for the potential new viewers.
As far as the level of Hypocrisy in the wealthy or the intelligensia, Stanley Kubrick displayed it quite well in 'Eyes Wide Shut'.... and yes the USA especially equates and promotes nudity equaling sex. They make Billions of dollars by doing so, and Billions more by keeping the 'Taboo' of it in place... Anyway, as I like to say, this is all, 'See Spot Run' stuff....

Sad to say I missed the SPI 2011 but does anyone know if there is actual footage of the "Welcome to 2031: Julia Hamm Presents Utility of Tomorrow" in which someone like me can access and tag along with this floating of a feather? Thanks in advance~
