U.S. Solar Pipeline Shifts Again, 2.25 GW of CSP Will Now Be PV

Coming on the heels of last week's announcement that concentrating solar power (CSP) manufacturer Stirling Energy Systems is bankrupt and liquidating, this week German-based Solar Millenium announced that it has sold its entire project portfolio for the Southwestern U.S. to solarhybrid AG, a German project development company.

The entire project portfolio, which includes 2.25 GW of planned CSP power plants, will be converted to PV. Solar Millennium AG will still receive profits upon construction of the power plants in the U.S. in addition to being reimbursed its entire investment in the projects, the announcement said.

Negotiations are underway and the companies say that they should be completed by the end of this month.  solarhybrid is currently performing a due-diligence assessment but has paid a first installment.

The companies indicate that other industry partners could be included in the projects but declined to specify who they might tap and in what capacity they might be included.

Solar Millennium said that it will now focus on new and already planned solar-thermal and hybrid power plants in Europe, Asia, North Africa and Latin America and expand its respective technology platforms. The company’s 50-MW Andasol 3 solar power plant was just completed in Spain last Friday.

Solar Millenium said it would come back to the U.S. as a parabolic trough CSP project developer “as soon as the demand for storable solar energy starts growing there once again.”

solarhybrid anticipates it could begin construction on the first American project — the 1,000 MW Blythe plant in California — as early as 2013.

No further details about the transaction were available.

Stirling Engines are really neat... but @Anne_van_der_Bom makes a point.

CSP is flawed in it's overconsumption of water (you think peak oil is a problem, wait till we hit peak water)

PV is flawed insofar as energy production remains intermittent.

Ultimately, I doubt "ALL other forms of energy production..." will ever be obsolete...

except maybe Nuclear fission. That's bad idea jeans.

John writes in comment #5: "Some industry pundits have long said that PV would be the "Crazy Eddie" of energy production. Someday making ALL other forms of energy production obsolete."

As I recall, "Crazy Eddie" started off with a cult following but ended up in prison for fraud and his business went bankrupt. This seems like a Freudian slip to me.

Solar insolation for London is roughly a factor of ten higher in July than its value in January yet the largest demand for energy is for heating. This alone should suggest that solar PV is not going to make "ALL other forms of energy production obsolete."

New CSP and storage innovations from Shec Energy:

With the unique solar receiver design,I understand the conversion efficiency is around 30 % and heat storage at 850 degrees C, much higher than molten salt.

Some industry pundits have long said that PV would be the "Crazy Eddie" of energy production. Someday making ALL other forms of energy production obsolete. It's looking more and more like those pundits were correct.

The progress means that even good technologies are found in museum. After 150 years, CSP is no exception

aligatorhardt,

These stirling engines do not offer any benefit over PV. Just moving parts and the reliability issues that come with them. You think the long fluid loops of solar trough technology is a disadvantage. Think again. They enable heat storage in large tanks to generate on demand solar power.

The solar power tower does not have these long loops. Will that be the winning technology for on demand solar power with cheap storage?

Yeah its a shame, I've wanted one of those in my yard, ever since I heard of SES, back in 2000!

What a shame that the low bid mentality has doomed such a great invention as the Sterling engine, which operated with no water needs or the use of long loops of fluids, such as with other CSP systems. Imagine what would happen if we all only bought low bid items; we would be surrounded by junk in most categories. Not to imply that PV is junk, but the Sterling engine system is worthy in it's own right. There is too much emphasis placed on only the bottom line. We do not use that in other areas of life for good reason. Often times quality and other concerns show that the best value over time is found by first considering need, local conditions, and long term usability, then price. I hope the new owners will continue the design and it will not disappear.
