An interesting webinar on Gulf of Maine offshore windpower
They announce a major PR campaign for hearts & minds through summer and winter and into spring 2012.

Click here for links to mp3s of all speakers at the 77 minute mtg http://tinyurl.com/iiwindwebinar070711

The saddest thing though, is that many of these well meaning people within the DeepCwind community, while committed to midwifing deepwater floating wind turbines safely into the Gulf of Maine, are singleminded in their determination that any dissent, any difference of opinion or inconvenient truth, any insight by the public is Never To Be Acknowledged. The dissenting or critical public, whose servants these NGOs very piously claim to be, is never to be responded to on the record, nor at any of their public events. Nor in any of the glossy publications they plan to blanket coastal Maine with, according to the webinar.

This tactic, effective as a political tool, is inappropriate and worse, dangerous, when one seeks safely exploiting renewable ocean energy. Not the favored fastest fast track, laden with political grease, which makes one want to wash one's hands after meeting with some DCWs.

Terribly rude to say so, but how lesser a sin than that 9th commandment violation by DeepCwind's PR teams, of lying through omission in their "public outreach" extravaganzas.

Lying in their fliers to be so liberally sprinkled about the coast. Lying at conferences, lying during interviews...always keeping the Cardinal Sin foremost: 'Thou Shalt Lie about the existence of opposition to, and even critics of, ocean windpower development in the Gulf of Maine'.

In this wicked age, is skillful lying the new way to arrive at truth? One hopes not, but it does seem to be the favored way.

To Penbay,

What are the lies?

Thanks

I think this is fabulous. This part of the country is behind most others in alternative energy utilization.Off shore wind has GREAT potential to blossom in the near future, and the shallow waters off the east coast are a huge benefit. Almost all of the off-shore in the world is in 30 meters of water or less.BUT also watch as "Makani Wind Power" and it's future competators come on.
The great green Google just made a sizeable investment in their development. "Google" them up.Once the off-shore infrastructure is in place, these "flying wings" can probably be built cheaper (and deeper) and use the same transmission lines, and/or wind mills.

GreenGas.cc is 50 cents a liter and zero emissions.

It is one of the only ways to store electric.

But it needs you and I to get behind it.

It is sad that soooooooooo many restrictions and regulations are put here (in the USA) on purpose, just to STIFLE any hopes of a cost effective large scale RE infra.

China does not allow such trivial nonsense to get in their way, and no wonder, the diffuse nature of the renewables just can NOT be burdened by silly enviro restrictions, period!

It is not fair to the end user to have to pay double or triple for clean electricity, JUST because of the retro enviro's litigation!

Known issues are already accounted for such as engineering physical strength and materials requirements for keeping within a logical safety code.

To all red-tape environmentalists seeking to further increase the costs of RE by use of needless EIS's, fee's and regulations... 'go suck on a smokestack'!

Yes. Being second in the world in wind energy,US can go in for massive offshore Wind Farms. The potential for offshore wind energy in US is great.

I expect that the opposition to offshore wind is being conducted by fake environmentalists, actually vested in fossil fuels, but masquerading as environmentalists. The opposition to the Cape Wind project is a good example of phony environmentalism, claiming turbines are an "eyesore" and bad for tourism and coastal views, when the turbines on the clearest days appear as vague 1/2 inch objects on the horizon at 5 miles out and basically invisible when farther offshore.
Another phony claim is concern for birds and bats, again not a problem with turbines offshore, as land based birds and bats do not spend much time flying over the ocean and the impacts of turbines have been far less than collisions with fixed structures including buildings on every study done so far. The same complainers seem to have no problem with the huge pollution related numbers of bird and bat deaths, or the infections devastating bat populations, related to pesticide uses.
Real environmentalists can see that a 90% improvement is far more desirable than waiting for an impossible 100% improvement in the harms from electricity production, meanwhile allowing the status quo to continue to degrade our environment in ways that are not curable. We must look at the improvement of renewable energy over extractive fuel uses and not quibble over petty complaints. It is a disgrace that phony trouble makers are allowed to ruin things for everyone. Sometimes petty complains must be called out for what they are. We cannot fool around with 10 year delays on every project like the Cape Wind project was subjected to.
