While General Electric is not exactly my "favorite" corporation - anymore than Bechtel (for what I hope are obivous reasons, such as their long-term ties to the military-industrial-corporate-welfare-state), it is nice to see it when such monolithic entities do the right and intelligent thing. Such firms often do have good, or even great, engineers amongst them, and so I'm glad when they're allowed to function.

when Jerry Brown was young, he made the perceptive comment that corporations weren't immoral, but amoral -- they'll do whatever it takes to make money (including getting bailed out, on the negative side, for example). In my own mind I thought of how such firms will "let your sweet old grandma die" if they could make money out of it, but . . . they would also prolong or save her life if they could make even more money doing that. It all depends ultimately on us -- the population at large, for it is we who vote and buy etc. Our own inner "morality" and intelligence etc. determines who we vote for, what policies (such as those that regulate the corporate world) are implemented . . . or not! Corporations are like governments, completely subject to the population's state-of-mind. And as the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi once stated (though he wasn't, historically, the first or only one to point it out), the government is "like a mirror . . . whatever gets it front of it, it reflects."

General Electric has a long history of innovation and research and development starting with its primary founder Thomas Edison Thomas Edison learned at an early point in his career as an inventor the futility of inventing anything that doesn't have a demand.
GE or any other corporation simply follows demand and works from there. Much of today's technical advances that we take for granted have a direct tie to military research of the past.

It has been and still is today very popular to condemn corporations for military research without any thought to advances that research brings and how widespread that technology becomes. Things we use today and would not want to do without are a direct result of prior military research by large corporations that was funded by governments around the world.

The internet, jet travel and medical advances beyond count are all things we would not want to do without today and if they were taken away the very same people that are the most vocal in their contempt for large corporations that fund much of their research through military funding would be the most strident in decrying the loss of the very advancements they currently denigrate.

No one wants to need any military research but at the same time we all want the advances in technology that very research brings. It is very difficult to retain any consistency when it comes to almost any kind of research as it tends to be driven by mankind's baser instincts.

Much the same as a coin has two sides this issues has two sides and like the coin we are unable to take only one side and still receive the benefit of having the coin itself.
