Windflow Techology (www.windflow.com) uses a similar drivetrain concept to the DeWind, called the Torque Limiting Gearbox which allows variable speed rotor and a synchronous generator (grid compatible as inherent voltage control, no power electronics/statcom so saves costs). It is reliable and proven with 150 turbine years running in Class 1 winds (98 turbines now installed: 2010 fleet had over 96% availablity). The Windflow 500 turbine which uses this technology has one of the lightest tower top masses for its output, and is IEC certified to Class 1A (Edition 3) by Lloyds Register.
