Shame on Ontario ... shame, shame, shame. northern Ontario shares the same geology as northern Quebec. Quebec produces 98% of its power from hydro with lots left over for its neighbors. Ontario ... not so much. Even Alberta which seems to be floating on coal and natural gas is doing better.

It should be noted that new hydro, wind or solar has most of its GHG impact up front and not on a continuing basis. The path to improvement is to increase the operating lifetime of this equipment (particularly wind). With hydro, creating new flood ponds results in a large initial release of GHG which persists for many years but eventually peters out - after that it's pretty clean. Upgrading existing facilities with modern fluidic and electromagnetic technology and/or increasing head by incorporating run-of-river into existing dams does not. Either way, it's way better than new NG peaking capacity favored by Ontario.

It's interesting to note that Ontario's recently announced lower Mattagami project is the largest in 40 years at a measly 440 MW which is still much smaller than existing or planned NG power stations.

The long term planning and responsible practices in electricity generation make Quebec a great example for all. I am totally jealous, where here in the US our government seems to be more interested in protectionism of old vested interests instead of planning and investment for everyone's benefit. Congratulations to Quebec for their efforts.

I will only buy an electric vehicle if safety is on par with ordinary vehicles (i.e. a 5-star EURO-NCAP crash test rating).

A lot of electric cars that you can see on the roads here in Norway, unfortunately, are totally unsafe. Just imagine having an accident with these...

Also, the price of these vehicles is far too high as of today. But things are getting better gradually and this is encouraging. Driving just on electricity is awesome.
