Excellent article, one of the key niches in Africa right now for solar is in the mobile (telecoms) space. The towers do not require much power (1-3KW) to operate and solar is a viable alternative to diesel generators. In most cases, we can demonstrate a return on investment in less than 2 years.

Our company has partnered with an innovative solar manufacturer in the US which allows us to offer financing to African telecom carriers at low rates (5%). We would be happy to get involved in future discussions and panels as needed to help stimulate this market.

Good article. Agriculture and mineral export will indirectly help to boost the solar market

I agree to what Mark Hankins has said in his article, and I believe many would love to support this cause. The major barrier to overcome, as it stands now (and as he has mentioned), is to convince the "influential stakeholders" that this is the right way to go. I hope we would be able to do that soon.

Great article. In most African countries, the cartel that imports electric generators are doing whatever it takes to discourage Government attention and misinform the consumers on Solar power benefits. As mentioned in your article we have to start small.

This is a great article, but I'd like to point out that off-grid village electrification is not only completed through international aid and relief agencies. I work for the Alliance for Rural Electrification, a business association that has members in over 50 companies that work in the off-grid sector and are creating sustainable local economies through project implementation and M&O. I agree that the market has been dominated by aid agencies and that the state of the industry is ready for the focus to shift to normal supply and demand economics. However, I wouldn't be too quick to write off the huge economic power residing in the rural areas. I think if the right product came to market (not necessarily cheap, just appropriate) that the rural-electrification could happen from within.

solar energy in Nigeria have contributed greatly in rural electrification (PV systems), telecommunications, water supply, etc. but it has not been utilized on large scale. No concentrating solar system is functioning in Africa now.this attributable to lack of information, supporting policy, financiers, and professionals in the field.this is what we urgently needs in Africa.
