There is a good article in the new DISCOVER magazine about companies that are attempting to suspend wind turbines much higher in the atmosphere without any concrete support from the ground, such as with helium ballons (among other ideas!). Featured in the article is the son of the one of Ken Kesey's Merry Prankster bunch, a self-made entrepreneur with hundreds of millions of his own funds - and his own brilliant mind -- invested in a project. Good read!

Turbines anchored on the ground, however, will remain the mainstay for the time being. I find these huge structures fascinating and beautiful (not to mention useful!).

I hope this isn't a really inefficient use of Spain's resources. The amount of incremental growth you get from building higher doesn't seem to be worth the additional cost.

These people really need to get out more. It's elementary mathematics (Area v Volume) which makes the turbine half of the "Turbine" twice the cost per watt or m^2 iff we double the size. It's other matters which cause the Alternator half of the "Turbine" to more or less Halve if we double the thro'put. This is just one of 4 simple reasons why these people's "idea" is born of handling far too much of Other People's money !!
