Great facts. Most people don't know they have been subsidizing coal for 30 years not to mention nuclear. Solar is clean and safe not to mention very cost effective making most when you need it most and sleeping while you do.

The ELI study highlighting $72B in subsidies is highly questionable. Just for starters, $15B of the oil&gas "subsidy" is for the foreign tax credit that all taxpayers get and is the basis for US companies to compete abroad. In addition they include $12B in items like LIHEAP and SPR which is certainly government spending but is not benefitting the industry (the product would have been sold otherwise or not made). They also include money for the highway trust fund which, also supports transportation rather than a particular fuel. The reason why the support is there is because less gasoline and diesel is being sold but people want infrastructure investment for jobs. Finally, the study does not really tackle the impact of the mandate nor tarriff support given to ethanol. It is not hard to honestly approach the subsidy issue and a look at the 2008 bailout, the 2009 stimulus and 2010 tax package should be enough to clarify where things really stand.

Kudos!

This is not only timely but very appropriate. It is a travesty that big oil spends so much on lobbying. If ALL consumers understood this I think we would see a revolt.

IMHO I also think there needs to be separation between bio-fuels (which technically are not really renewable) and PV/Wind! We are used to lumping these into the same category, more education is needed.
