Much of the information in this article has appeared in other reports during the past 6 months or so.For many years, PV News used to bring out data on "module shipments" each year from different companies and countries. They were accurate to perhaps + or - 10%. Now we have various magazines, consultancy companies and analysts bringing out data on cell production, module shipments or PV installations, each according to its preference. Such data is often mutually inconsistent.

The data compiled in this article for the period contains information from diverse sources and perhaps contains different kinds of numbers. One is not sure if they can be put in the same table or graph. Still, thanks to J.M.Roney.

The expansion of solar power is good news. The price parity is coming in sooner than expected, while the price of fossil fuels can be expected to continue to rise. There should be more effort to show people how much pollution costs in terms of health care and attempts at clean ups of spills. The thin film technology is new and already is bringing costs down. Too bad the US government is not more involved in support of clean energy, but the corporate financing of elections is creating conflicts of interest in energy. It is good to hear that the US military is testing and using renewable systems. The military reportedly uses more than three quarters of the US petroleum purchases, so any replacement of that energy can be very helpful, and hopefully we can reach the point where wars for oil are just a bad memory.
