As Pogo said "I have met the enemy and they is us." Too many people consuming too much = non-sustainability. This has been coming for years and it is finally happening.

Such blatent honesty must surely come from another world. Interesting vision, David.
It is also interesting to note the resurgence of "foolproof" nuclear energy advocates that are plying the blogospheres. "Many European countries are doing it" they say. "We will be losing out" they further admonish. Yet, can anyone calculate the final effect of a tiny fraction of possibility of a holocaustic failure? They claim cheap energy,(yes, they still do!) and the risk of massive destruction and unmanageable waste is certainly worth the bargain, if we are to remain a dominant world power!

Peace to such foolishness. We must get used to the idea- we have already relinquished world power to the profitability of the mega corporations that have perverted the common welfare to their own. To see a world with hatred and attack is the lot of the weak. Poor babies. Send them all your money, quickly.

The very responsible to my point of view is very poor standard, mainly on safety level. The important is not to find a guilty but avoiding new cathastrophe. A special comission now should be done to write a better standard code and putting emphasis to check all paltform (every 2-3 years you need a technical vist on your car, and should be the same here) and upgrade should be done with new standard code as on Nuclear Industry having at least 2 or better 3 backup system. If nothing is do in that sense it means than government people are very stupid or paid under the table.

good article . corporations have run our governments(US and UK) for a long time.
Oil lobby misinformation is so great that the layman has no real idea what is the truth . I believed ten years ago that Hydrogen power had the most potential of all for vehicle and eventually power generation with geothermal ,wave , wind ,and solar following . Nuclear being another option about which I am not sure.
Biogas and biomass have great potential as you point out for recycling but on relatively small scale in my opinion.
Hydrogen is the best option worldwide . The technical storage and production problems will soon be overcome. Millions of vehicles will be running on hydrogen within 10-15 years and millions of localised generating plants will follow . The only reason it was not developed before was that large corporations such as Honda GM , needed to get the technology sorted themselves, and the infrastructure is not in place --- just wait.
The oil companies and other corporations have paid lip service to solar and other so called clean technologies,, what a sham . They were petrified about oil prices falling on the stock market and billions being lost in investment . They put huge pressure on governments to prevent new technologies replacing their liquid gold.

I could not agree more; and while we have such a huge population all needing gainful employment and wanting 'stuff' (to be able to use all the resources currently advertised), it is difficult to see how we can get back to a sane and considerate world.

If we do not use oil, oil won't be spilled.

Before we can use something else, consumers need to have a choice of other fuels.

There are vehicles being built and on sale today that can run on gasoline, gasoline and ethanol mixtures, pure hydrous ethanol, and/or natural gas. We need for this technology to made mandatory on any new vehicle sold in the US.
