I'm not sure I understand why smart grid investment impacts stranded renewable energy resources . . . Couldn't the "dumb" grid just be extended to these resources?

Also, why is it nearly impossible to build out EV infrastructure without the smart grid? I am under the impression that the only hurdles in the forseeable future to this investment are small local infrastructure investments by utilities to make sure adequate capacity exists to handle the increased load. Sure some smart grid investments may lead to some efficiency improvements in managing these new loads.

Let's be straight here. Smart Grid is a huge term and the broadest of brushes. Right now the only existing need is the integration of renewables. Technically this should be added as an integration cost and be implemented down to the electrical-station level but not beyond. IF and/or WHEN load-point solar, plug in EVs, etc become a factor, then DSM is needed. To talk about Smart Grid as a whole in such absolute terms is a bit too general.

This is all good stuff. We need to develop new technology to help in this sector. We have a piece of equipment that takes nearly all organic waste and turns it into electricity. This is combustion free..ALL ELECTRIC! We are looking for a pilot program for a 5tpd or 25tpd. If you have a project that can benefit from this technology please e-mail me.

Best,

Smartest grid would be a common voltage worldwide grid. Its time for energy to cross some barriers. Standardized voltages will allow countries to exchange energy directly.
Sun and wind operate continuosly on each side of the world. Everyone should be able to take advantage of this fact. Energy storage (lithium batteries etc.) should supplement this grid.
That will take the strain off the grid as EV's become more common.
