Your title "Boosting Power and Fish Survival Through Cutting-Edge Turbines" made me shudder as I pictured fish going through a maze of sharp-edged cutting blades. I assumed then, and that turned out to be true, that it was a line to get my attention, not to harvest more fish - and it did.

The story reports some interesting information, and reinforces the idea that "old green" is still green, but it can become even greener with newer technology. I like that: the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the article.

The other half of the article are the new technologies that divert fish, eels, and other migratory species from turbines. The European approach is to study the protected species and then design water diversion canals, filters, and other devices which seperate the species from the penstock.

There are even newer designs for migratory fishways...a Hungarian one doubles as a white water kayaking channel, enabling kayakers to use it while fish migrate from pylon to pylon.

And even ancient devices like Archimedes screws are being used, since slow turning screws enable many species to swim through them and they can even be reversed to move pools of fish upstream.

The old scare tactics of 'free-river' zealots are hard to dispell; but there is a new generation of water energy harvesters who love to fish...their devices, i.e. light aversion blinkers for alewives are a marvel to watch in action.

Interesting that the original old screw Archimedes would once again find its way to the surface, shallow stream, and prove efficient,in conditions which other wise would be past over.Just goes to prove a long slow screw can be a good thing.

Fish ,most of the fish that move about and really have problems with Dams are Salmon. So why bother to make dams fish friendly after all this time, but they should be if we can solve the present problem.
Thanks to the fish farms the wild salmon will become extinct in soon 2\3years time .Like many of the eagles ,beavers , bears etc that need this fish survive ,will also die as this important fish dies off . Along with the tourist salmon industry and other important businesses that need this wild fish . Thanks to misuse of pesticides other drugs used in the fish food and washed off the land . The fish lice * blood suckers that have mutated and and cannot be killed! That live and breed in the shit, under the tank nets farms~ In the salmon river estuaries which now killing all the baby salmon on the race to survive and get into to the seawater ,as they pass the farms . One or two of these lice ,can kill the baby salmon by sucking their blood and energy away ,during this vital journey in this part of their life cycle . Look it up for yourselves,it shocking and a bloody shame .Thats why and many other reasons 4 Paz charity has the cyberlifeboat.org project going . Support and sponsors welcome ,Willa the electric whale will become the best bill board in world ,your company logo could be on the ketvat that give her RE. Kite energy tree vertical axis wind turbine and wet kite multi axis turbines .From 4paz charity . River estuaries are ideal for 4paz hydro foil conveyor systems and wet ketvat for REH www.sims.tv . Our early basic systems have been copied by Atlantis and now make the cheapest REH in the world . Archimedes screws do not give the good energy dynamic amplification as correctly designed hydro kite foils give ,going down and across the flow like our bottom foil conveyor systems do . These systems can be in ,over of floating ,the floating systems also serve as wild life island, heliports , housing ,wild life sports ,floating Hotel, bases etc
