Illinois Ramps Up Solar

Illinois -- On the same day that Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn signed a bill increasing solar targets in the state, he also announced a stimulus grant award for a 62-MW solar PV project. The project will be the largest in the Midwest and one of the largest in the U.S.
The up to 62 MW Rockford Solar Project will generate enough electricity to power over 10,000 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions at a rate of 113,000 tons annually, equivalent to the emissions from nearly 20,000 cars. The Project will significantly help electricity suppliers achieve the required 0.5% solar target by 2012.
The Midwest is known more for wind and biofuels projects than solar. But with a number of states adopting specific solar targets and incentive programs, solar is starting to grow at a faster pace in the region. The 62-MW Rockford Solar Project is the first of its kind for the Midwest, however. Governor Quinn announced the grant award at a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Wanxiang America solar manufacturing plant. The 62-MW Rockford Solar Project is the effort of Rockford Solar Partners, LLC, a joint venture between Wanxiang America and Chicago-based renewable energy developer, New Generation Power to develop and operate an up to 62 MW photovoltaic solar generation facility in Rockford, Illinois.
