The 260 million dollar deal happens to represent the largest single foreign investment in the Icelandic economy since the economic collapse in the fall of 2008.

The fact that "EU legislation stipulates that energy firms in Europe must be owned by European companies" is a very obvious legal problem -- not that the other legal problem mentioned-- that the Icelandic government knew of Magma's plans and did nothing for nine months (!) isn't just as valid. What a mess.

To me it reminds me of the problems we have in the US over gun legislation. We all know what the 2nd amendment says, and to interpret it as saying that "The Army has the right to keep and bear arms" is rather silly. So the real problem isn't gun control (necessarily anyway), but rather the attempt to effectuate it using what are obviously questionable unconstitutional methods. Those justifiably afraid of the mis-use and abuse of guns have had decades and decades to argue for a constitutional amendment that would add restrictions or revoke the 2nd amendment (remember the 18th amendment, and then, 13 years later, the 21st? Prohibtion and its demise).

Like the US, Iceland needs to get its act together on the legal front! Of course, being more intelligent that us, they probably will get there to a greater degree than we have! :-)

Thanks for the article!
