Iberdrola Renovables has started up operations at the Penascal wind farm in the state of Texas. This is the largest facility operated by the company worldwide with installed capacity of 404 megawatts (MW).

The Penascal complex is located in Kenedy County, Texas and comprises two wind farms, Penascal I and Penascal II. The facility has 168 Mitsubishi MHI 92 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.4 MW. The facility created some 20 direct jobs in maintenance and operation of the wind farms. Around 200 people were involved in its construction and the project was built by Mortenson Construction.

The full project became operational in April 2010 and power from this project is delivered to customers of CPS Energy of San Antonio and the South Texas Energy Cooperative (STEC). Iberdrola recieved a $114 million treasury grant for the project as part of the stimulus funds that were released in September 2009.

The complex’s innovative features include a radar system that detects the arrival of large flocks of migratory birds and shuts down the turbines if visibility conditions present a danger.

Papalote Creek Wind Farm is in Taft, Texas North of Portland. I do not see any dead bats. We have people on site to monitor any deaths of birds or bats. Get your facts straight!

Ever try to catch a bat? Hard to believe they can't evade a turbine blade.

TX A&M in Kingsville has been studying the use of the radar to detect migrating birds, and the bird traffic in that region has been phenomenal.  However, the company has not issued any criteria in that it would follow to shut down turbines. Since Iberdrola is responsible for supplying a certain amount of electricity to the grid, they cannot afford to shut down turbines. Thus, these statements by Iberdrola are nothing short of a media spin. In addition the wind project in Portland north of Nueces Bay, is reported to be killing lots and lots of bats.
