Asia has sent a clear message that it will lead the green revolution. Strange as we western countries have criticized the dirty energy economies of these areas in events such as Copenhagen in 2009. They are truly leading by example. In order to stay in the race, the United States needs to drastically follow suit, and them some. This means setting better Renewable Energy Standards as well structuring the necessary financial instruments to promote renewable energy research and development on a substantial scale.

Indian Wind Industry currently has 3 key success factors going for it - adequate natural resources, progressive government policies as summarised in detail in the article above and most importantly the availability of a host of support mechansim - in terms of presence of suppliers (technology), Wind assessment centres,Monitoring stations, Wind turbine Test centres etc. These support mechanism makes it attractive to be the most commercialised renewable energy segment in India. Technology trend in India - Leading players including the global leader has preferred to market the simplest, cheaper but obsolete design with fixed speed using Asynchronous Induction Generator, except Enercon who are marketing a successful variable speed gearless design. It appears that Utilities have not shown any interest in implementing regulations which may make the Wind Power more 'Network friendly'.

It is only in the recent past that DFIG designs are being introduced.

Siemens and GE are trying to introduce their overseas business models into India and it it is too early to predict whether it will be successful.

It is unfortunate that BHEL has totally neglected Wind Energy though they had a good partner. There are a few other new players who are miserable failures some even before launching their product, becasue they had neglected the technology aspect.

Tamilnadu has a total capacity 550 MW of Pumped storage Hydroelctric Station even before Wind Power was introduced. It is unfortunate that there is no fresh intiative from the Government or Utilities for enhancing storage capacity which will be most beneficial for interconnecting Intermittent power sources like wind.
