The problem with inverters is the loss in power from converting DC to AC. What makes this problem worse is that most of the consumption of power reconverts AC back to DC. What would make much more sense would be a pure DC system. Obviously the existing infrastructure is AC, but that could change over time.

Greg,

There are DC to AC inverters at 99% conversion efficiency now so it's not as much of a problem.

You will be seeing efficiencies near this in the US very soon, this is all I can say.

AC to AC conversion at the transmission and distribution level is much more reliable when using a transformer, especially when surges happen.

Anonymous,
Just because a lab in Germany has reached the 99% mark (world record), doesn't mean they are available on the open market. They are "vaporware" until they are in the field.
My concern with micros is the capacitors and the extreme heat they are exposed to in Hawaii. Also, end users tend to treat the web data as infallible.
It is a product that has it's niche and hopefully will be around for a while.
Other manufactures (SMA) are currently developing a similar product.
