Sorry to ruin your article, but from what I read here up, the PHEV or EV models made in China are not commercial successes. The BYD model having a 150 miles range on electric mode alone, and selling for $22 000 is too expensive for Chinese wallets, who prefer to fork over $10 000 to buy a petrol driven car. The Western world alternatives are all much more expensive without government rebates : Nissan Leaf EV = $ 35 000, GM Volt PHEV = $ 40 000 , Toyota Prius hybrid = $ 25 000.

Unless the Chinese government primes the pump with subsidy and government purchase of whole car parks, this technology will not get off the ground, unless the crude oil price goes through the roof, which one day will be the case. And BYD manufactures it's own batteries, meaning they are made cheap.

The Best Peak Oil Investments, Part III: Natural Gas Vehicles. The case for natural gas vehicles is only convincing if you don't compare them to the alternatives.

How do you define "alternative energy vehicle?" That's a term I'm not familiar with. Hybrid and plug-in electric designs ultimately use fossil fuels (albeit more efficiently) while a switch-fuel or bio-diesel engine would use what's considered alternative energy in the form of ethanol and other bio fuels.

The latter category is not dependent on batteries and should be more affordable to not only the Chinese market but to any developing automobile market.
