It's a shame that all of this capacity has been installed on perfectly good farmland! The Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) was a flawed first attempt to get renewables off the ground (no pun intended). The projects mentioned were initially developed prior to the financial meltdown, and have been picked up by First Solar. The Sarnia projects were initially announced over two years ago.

The new Feed In Tariff program finally has the correct incentives to get solar on building rooftops, and specifically excludes taking good farmland out of service. If only the owners of those rooftops could see the financial advantages of developing or leasing their roofs for essentially guaranteed long term revenue, we'd have something.
